Mr Thornton should be cloned and all surgeons should "operate" in the same manner. He responded to my situation and offered a very detailed explanation of the procedure I was to undergo. I was faced with a 12 week wait. We wrote to him about this and he responded positively. He had the possibility of a cancellation the next day and rang to offer me the slot. I accepted and was told to expect an early morning call to let me know. It was a yes. After the procedure I was home and in my own bed by 11.30pm that night. What a great outcome. Big Thornton fan as you can imagine.

I don't believe these are necessarily the correct sort of questions which will make the care given improve. The personality of the care giver is secondary to the wait for the care or the quality and effectiveness of the treatment given. Mr Thornton is clearly a very skilled and caring doctor indeed. I would however suggest that a different approach to the procedure of Hemorrhoid Banding I received be taken insomuch that the patient be better informed of post procedure reactions from the treatment. I believe that had I been better informed of the severity of the pain, my anxiety level may have been reduced accordingly. Furthermore if there is no access to better pain management for such long term suffering, this procedure should be reconsidered.

I was contacted very promptly by Mr Thornton following my GP referral. My consultation took place at the appointed time and I was very satisfied with the examination, diagnosis and recommended follow up.

Mr. Thornton has a fantastic bedside manner and he talks to you in a language that you can understand, no medical jargon. He devotes enough time to each patient to find out how they are and what concerns, if any, they have. The recovery programme is beneficial for a speedy return to normality. I don't think there is anything else that can be added to the programme to improve the situation. Obviously each individual has a different rate of recovery dependent on the severity of the operation, in my case I have nothing but praise for the way my case was handled.

  • General surgery

Profile

Upon completing medical school in Sheffield in 2000, my early surgical training was completed in South Yorkshire following which I moved to Merseyside to complete my higher surgical training. During this period I also completed a 2 year period of research into colorectal cancer towards my MD thesis.
I have recently been appointed as a Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, with a subspecialty interest in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery. Prior to commencing this position, I completed a 6-month Laparoscopic fellowship working with Professor Pete Sagar at St James Hospital in Leeds. This training allowed me to extend my skills with advanced laparoscopic colorectal procedures. I have experienced the breadth of subspecialty colorectal practice, training in both tertiary referral and district general units. I manage both elective and emergency general surgical conditions.
My expertise is within all aspects of gastrointestinal disease, but in particular, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, incontinence and benign proctology including fistula and fissure. I am also trained in most aspects of general surgery such as abdominal wall hernia and gallstones.
